PIN CALACAL

Pin Calacal, In Still Waters, 2020, Acrylic, pen and ink, graphite, and watercolor on paper, 16 x 20 in (40.64 x 50.8 cm)

Pin Calacal (b. 1988) is a visual artist from Manila, Philippines. Most of her works are anchored in her understanding of the body and its control, sickness and temporariness. Using the body also as a “lens”, her concerns extend to identity, the fleetingness of human connections, the definition of home and place, and the social structures tied to these.

She works with a variety of mediums and materials, which include graphite, acrylic, pen and ink, yarn, textile, paper, found objects and hair. She also puts importance on her art processes, which she describes as ritualistic, necessarily repetitive, occasionally performative, and borderline obsessive.
