INDY PAREDES:

STRENGTH OF FRAGILITY

Protect what is inside; never let the outside forces ruin it. A body is meant to have a phase of deterioration as it occupies space in a given time. There is no debate on the duality of each form's toughness and friability. Everything we see is not in their final form. We traverse through time and interact with different elements, thus, we share our vigor and faults with them. Having this phenomena, we emphatically glide together as we change.

There is a tendency that our bodies would obtain a protective layer that could diminish the chances of wearing. We invented sheds, shelters, containers, casings, covers, and other agents that would safeguard our fragile bodies. These agents are also bodies that could weaken and, therefore, could have their own fragility. Thus, a body and its covering could share the same strength. The only difference is that the covering was the front-line defense. Together, they could form a new form --- a new body that can endure a higher magnitude of force that has acted upon them. Two fragile bodies sharing a single space become a new world.

You are the viewer and this space is your cover. You are fragile and so is this place. Together, it is a different atmosphere. You are one with your own world. You are your world.

Indy Paredes’ (b.1988) art practice is a close understanding of the physicality of Filipino urban culture, most especially the dynamics of living and creating in residential spaces and congested areas in the metropolis. He examines the interrelation of his perception of constructions in private and public spaces and his study of the individual’s ways of negotiating with these through experiential outputs in the form of large-scale site-specific sculptures and installations. His works have been exhibited in different galleries and art institutions, here and abroad, such as the Vargas Museum and the 2018 Gwangju Biennale. Paredes studied Fine Arts (Painting) at the University of the Philippines, Diliman, and at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, France.
