THE SHELF LIFE OF BEING
Sidney Valdez
Sidney Valdez (b. 1988) is a conceptual painter and video artist born in Muntinlupa, Philippines. After receiving his BFA from the Far Eastern University, he worked as a graphic artist in 2011. He had been an apprentice of conceptual artist Mark Justiniani and painter/sculptor Kat Medina. He was also a part of Southern Tagalog Exposure (STeX), a multimedia group from Luzon.
Valdez is also a human rights activist and draws subjects and concept from the dreads of neoliberalism particularly in the Philippine context while integrating meme culture as an emblem of our time. His works are provocative, politically charged, comical, and psychedelic; his works often draw from stock images of realistic paintings pulled from the internet or from personal files.
