ESTATE OF RODOLFO PARAS - PEREZ
Rodolfo “Rod” Paras-Perez (1934-2011, Philippines) was an artist, art historian, critic, and curator. As an artist, he worked through different formats such as painting, print, collage, sculpture, and moving image, producing a body of works deemed experimental for its time. He had authored several publications on Vicente Manansala, Fernando Amorsolo, Juvenal Sansó, Guillermo Tolentino, Fernando Zóbel, and Federico Aguilar Alcuaz. He was significant in promoting Southeast Asian contemporary art to the international audience, as evidenced by exhibitions he curated, which featured Pacita Abad, among others. He produced paintings and prints from the 1960s to the 1970s featuring intimate human figure renderings. Many of these prints were made using woodcut in its relief printing technique, a process attributed by critics to Paras-Perez as its primary resuscitator.
Paras-Perez received his BFA from the University of the Philippines (cum laude) in 1957 and his MFA from the University of Minnesota in 1961. He was the first Filipino to receive a Ph.D. in Art History from Harvard University. His works are in several institutional collections, such as the National Gallery of Singapore, the Harvard Museum, and the Uffizi Gallery. His life and work were the subject of exhibitions at the Lopez Museum and Ateneo Art Gallery, both held in 2014.
