I fly in my dreams

How about you in your dreams?

In another sky?

- From Ma. Milagros Dumdum’s “Falling on Quiet Water (a haiku sequence)”

Throughout history, human lives have been intricately linked to heavenly bodies, as seen in the temporal patterns of the star and moon alignments, the interpretation of positions and characteristics, and their influence on weather forecasts, which continue to shape cultures and societies. Drawing inspiration from Cebuano poet Milagros Dumdum’s collection of haikus, the exhibition In Another Sky is inspired by the captivating ways in which the skies envelop the earth and transform across time, place, and space. It features Erika Abe, Grace Impas, Jheane Borja, Julia Borja, Kelli Maeshiro, Leahrly Curitana, Pepe Delfin, and Sam Bumanlag. The exhibition explores the artists’ depictions of the ether’s profound impact as it attempts to materialize a connection with the audience through the paintings presented.

The artists in this exhibition are from different regions within the Philippines and across the Pacific: Manila, Cebu, Cavite, Aurora, Capiz, and Hawaii. In a dialogue that reflects individual and shared memories, each piece captures experiences unique to one artist and yet parallels another in some shape or form despite differences in locality. Even with their different approaches to abstraction and the use of vivid colors, a degree of solidarity is echoed throughout these varying images, cutting across barriers between cultural landscapes. Hence, we are reminded of our collective experience under the same sky– life in different bodies, time zones, and frames of mind while we exist within constellations that bind us. Beyond that, we are invited to reflect on the narrative inside Dumdum’s haikus and contemplate the endless possibilities the sky offers. The shared human experience and unique perspective are stories that begin to unfold and unravel across different boundaries while we explore our dreams and visions. With these images, we continue illuminating the innumerable human experiences while celebrating the diversity that brings us together.

Under the vast and boundless expanse of the universe, we find ourselves dreaming together even when miles apart, connected by the same firmament and, if not, in another sky.

About the Artists

  • Erika Abe (b.1998) merges her reflections and observations on life and builds upon narratives from fragmented images usually drawn from manga. Her Japanese lineage influences her interest in such. Abe received her BFA (Sculpture) from the University of the Philippines, Diliman; she was a finalist in the 2023 Metrobank Art and Design Excellence Competition (Watermedia on Paper Category). Abe lives and works in Cavite.

  • Born and raised in Cebu City, Grace Impas' (b.1996) artistic sensibilities were influenced by her upbringing in a household where she witnessed the tradition of painting through her father's practice of Visayan Contemporary Realism. She draws inspiration from classical human figures, translating into gestural abstraction and focusing on form and color. Impas' art balances expressionism and realism with the contemporary to evoke unspoken emotions and stillness. Impas has exhibited at the Visayas Art Fair, Florentino's Art Gallery, and Espacio Manila. She lives and works between Manila and Cebu while completing her degree in Medicine

  • Jheane Borja (b.2001) is based in Cebu City, Philippines. She predominantly works with painting and integrates disparate elements into cohesive wholes. She values her sketchbook as a space to explore and refine forms before translating them into finished artworks. Her works have been presented at the Visayas Art Fair and Art Fair Philippines. She was recently exhibited in a two-person show with her sister Julia Borja at Qube Contemporary.

  • Julia Borja (b.2002) experienced a childhood shaped by homeschooling and a semi-solitary environment, profoundly influencing her connection to art through media and observation. Borja's artistic paintings vary from planned compositions to spontaneous explorations of the human figure. Her art reflects an intuitive interpretation of life and emotions, often featuring simplistic and familiar figurations. Borja's works have been featured at the Visayas Art Fair and Art Fair Philippines. She shares a studio with her sister Jheane Borja in Cebu City. Their works were recently exhibited in a two-person show at Qube Contemporary.

  • Kelli Maeshiro’s (b.1989) works are characterized as delicate and introspective, creating an inviting atmosphere that portrays themes of longing and ennui. She merges traditional and contemporary art-making techniques in forming images that examine how identity is constructed through migration and memory drawn from her experience as a Japan-born adoptee of an Okinawan-American family. Maeshiro received her BA in Studio Art (Painting) from the Willamette University in Salem, Oregon, and completed artist residencies at the Vermont Studio Center (USA) and the Women's Studio Workshop (USA). In 2018, she received the George and Nobuko Azumano Award. Her works were featured in exhibitions at the National Museum of the Philippines, Hallie Ford Museum of Art, and the Honolulu Museum of Art. She lives and works in the cities of Manila and Honolulu.

  • Leahrly Curitana (b.1999) lives and works between Aurora and Quezon City. Her works share a surrealist approach using symbolisms, different perspectives, and elements that resonate with her life through illustrations, paintings, and installation works. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from the University of the Philippines Diliman. Her works were featured in different exhibitions around Manila.

  • Pepe Delfin (b.1991) explores abstract forms through geometric shapes and lines. The careful placement of these elements produces visual narratives of Delfin's experiences, observations, and relationships with people and contemporary life. Her paintings, illustrations, and video installations include scenarios that depict solitude and the multitude of expressions through bright colors and structures as a form of expression, unbounded by traditional forms of image-making. Delfin's approach to geometrical abstraction broadens the perspective one can take in portraying reality according to the artist's observation and perception. The non-illusionistic settings found in her works prompt a realm filled with cues that engage the viewers to form their understanding of images, meanings, and realities.

  • Sam Bumanlag (b.1999) works with mixed media images through paintings and installations to capture the tenderness and sentiment of memory embedded within the complex relationship of humans to objects. She juxtaposes the past and the present through the illustration and display of memorabilia, trinkets, and personal effects. She received her BFA in Painting from the University of the Philippines Diliman. Her works have been featured in exhibitions at Art Fair Philippines and The Drawing Room.
