Iann Villamor, Jheane Borja, Julia Borja,
Luis Hidalgo, Marie Nelle Valmoria

The exhibition Interiors of Collapsing Stars launches the first in a series of collaborations between artist/community-centric art platforms, KalawakanSpacetime and MONO8. Featuring artists from Manila and the Visayas region in the early stages of their artistic practices, the presentation draws from astronomer Carl Sagan’s insights on the fundamental elements of life: as we are ‘forged in stars’ and that to understand humanity, we must look into the universe and the world around us. Participating artists are Adrian Labuguen, Bea Batungbacal, byresidents, Iann Villamor, Jheane Borja, Julia Borja, Luis Hidalgo, and Marie Nelle Valmoria.

Adrian Labuguen (b.2001) is a Manila-based artist whose works bring together experimental and traditional techniques in art-making predominantly through image-based references realized through paintings and other mediums. His subjects are drawn from pop culture, psychology, his interest in the production of mass media, and the making of celebrity icons . Labuguen’s works were featured in Art Fair Philippines, Visayas Art Fair, Art in the Park, and Xavier Art Fest.

Bea Batungbacal (b.1998) is a painter whose works reflect the diversity and style of places, people, and settings, which are often translated into detailed and vibrant images that capture the complexities and mundanities of everyday life. Trained as a competitive athlete, she illustrates her observations through compositions where the foreground and the background appear to be wrangling for dominance in presenting narratives anchored in either movement or stillness to seize a moment. Her works were featured in a solo exhibition at the Rosenblut & Friedmann Gallery in Madrid; and in group presentations in Manila and Seoul. She received her BA in Communication from Ateneo De Manila University and studied at the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid under ADMU’s Junior Term Abroad Program.

Paolo Muncada (b.2000) also known as byresidents is an artist- designer born and raised in the coasts of Northern Samar. His multidisciplinary practice bridges graphic design, illustration, typography, and printmaking. Grounded and rooted in play, his creative process celebrates exploration, experimentation, and the spirit of DIY culture.

Iann Villamor’s (b.1982) eclectic paintings employ a palette that responds to the psychological and emotional dimensions of color. The images in his works produce tension between form and color, with layers of texture that emphasize spontaneity and freedom. Following the tradition of abstract expressionism, Villamor creates a sense of movement and rhythm that reminds the viewer of the artist’s hand and gesture as testimony to life. Apart from being an artist, he is also a musician and the co- founder of the design brand Baybayin bags.

Jheane Borja (b.2001) is based in Cebu City, Philippines. She predominantly works with painting and integrates disparate elements into cohesive wholes. She values her sketchbook as a space to explore and refine forms before translating them into finished artworks. Her works have been presented at the Art Fair Philippines, Visayas Art Fair, Xavier Art Fest, and TOPS ArtFest. Along with her sister Julia, she was featured in two-man exhibitions Cebu’s Qube Contemporary and Manila’s Secret Fresh.

Julia Borja (b.2002) experienced a childhood shaped by homeschooling and a semi-solitary environment, profoundly influencing her connection to art through media and observation. Borja’s artistic paintings vary from planned compositions to spontaneous explorations of the human figure. Her art reflects an intuitive interpretation of life and emotions, often featuring simplistic and familiar figurations. Borja’s works have been featured at the Visayas Art Fair, Art Fair Philippines, and TOPS ArtFest. She shares a studio with her sister, Jheane, in Cebu City. Along with her sister Jheane, she was featured in two-man exhibitions Cebu’s Qube Contemporary and Manila’s Secret Fresh.

Luis Hidalgo (b.1995) primarily works with moving image and video installations that challenge the viewer’s perspective on the way images are consumed. Often, he experiments by breaking the rules of composition in filmmaking, thus, presenting different ways to introduce overlooked narratives. His recent works explore micro-histories to understand the past and speculate the future. He received his degree in Digital Filmmaking at the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde in 2015 and was a Cinemalaya finalist for his short film “Nakauwi Na” (2016).

Marie Nelle Valmoria (b.2000) is a Cebu-based artist and curator. In her art practice, she merges painting and new media, with a particular interest in Cybernetic Art and the use of Augmented Reality in weaving together narratives drawn from folklore and the contemporary. As a curator, Valmoria is interested in mapping Cebuano art practices and finding sustainable approaches to developing such within and outside the Visayas region. Valmoria graduated from the University of the Philippines in Cebu, where she completed a curatorial internship at the university’s Jose T. Joya Gallery. She worked as a Projects and Exhibitions Intern at MONO8 and continues to engage with the platform’s programs in Cebu. Last year, she was selected to participate in ‘Curatorial Conversations: practices and potentials’, the inaugural curatorial incubator program of the De La Salle- College of St. Benilde and the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design.
