‘Halfway House’ reflects on the idea of navigating spaces amid changes. The works of Denver Garza and Ev Yu respond to the notion of transformation and renewal. Here, Yu’s paintings in the shape of tiny blocks remind us of stepping stones that guide us in crossing streams or bodies of water (as usually seen in cartoons). However, the safe space can sometimes become a maze or a trap, which is similar to how we constantly have to move from the virtual to the real to survive. Meanwhile, Garza’s works are drawn from his realizations of the past six years he had endured in building his career. His works are fueled by experiences that highlight a time before committing to pursuing his art career. Garza ponders these shifts in his personal and professional life through monochromatic works: drawings and textile works that bring to the fore simple figures that tend to return to their basic forms. Hence, when things are in between crises, the natural reaction is to become more attuned to every situation’s simple representations.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Denver Garza (b. 1987) uses an assemblage of canvas and fabrics to create art that reflects his interest in philosophy. Referencing various psychological frameworks, he believes that social rituals and interactions shape the identity of our society. Through his intricate works, he presents a visual phenomenology where he explores and analyzes modern behavior.
Ev Yu (b. 1990) is a visual artist based in Manila. Using watercolor as her main medium, Yu’s works revolve around the intricacies of printmaking and graphic design, highlighting and recreating the imperfections of machine intervention. Most of her imagery is based on static and kinetic forms. Combining landscape images in motion, the result is a hodgepodge of abstract forms arranged in a comic book-like sequence. Yu received her degree in Fashion Design and Merchandising from the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde.
