Ros Johnson: New Beginnings
January 19 - February 11, 2021
The works of UK-based artist, Ros Johnson, are featured for the first time in Southeast Asia. New Beginnings focuses on surface work as visual manifestations and representations of control and release, which is an improvisational approach to image-making. The artist explains, “Integral is the fabric of the work, for it is the broken and discarded remnants of past projects that are the inspiration. At a time where we must pick up the pieces of our social, economic and spiritual life, we search with our hands and eyes to rebuild the fresh and the vital.”
Playfully working at speed, Johnson delicately crafted a collection that explores layered texture and tone, alongside vibrant colours while keeping in mind the ever-present shadow she attended to each work--- awake and curious about things that rise unexpectedly from her practical processes.
Johnson takes an interdisciplinary approach to practice through mixed media painting, drawing, and textile works. She exploits her materials’ inherent characteristics, taking an extemporary approach to the process—the artist views such as a haptic collaborative relationship between maker, process, and material. Thus, creating tensions between mediums and heightening the presence of the unknown results in inexhaustible momentum and spontaneity.
Ros Johnson received her MA in Creative Practice from Leeds Arts University. She was featured in several presentations in the United Kingdom. She was the Creative Lead for Space Invaders at the Malthouse in York and was the Warehouse Studios' co-founder.
