The places we live in are sites where history and identities are formed. Working in collage, painting, and drawing, Regina Reyes reflects on the sensibilities attached to being connected to a specific location. Her family’s ancestral home situated in the middle of the old downtown in Taytay, Rizal becomes the subject of her introspection.

Temporal Dwellings highlights scenes caught in the middle of a drastic transformation---from living in a place shared with the rest of the community to its shift as a quiet private residence. Reyes’ points out that the home is not merely a place but a lived experience surrounded by ephemeral fragments that shape our existence. In this case, the line between the personal and the communal had its blurry junctures a couple of decades back when some members of the clan took leadership roles in the community and opened the gates of their private home to become an unofficial extension of the municipal hall. This period marked the artist’s childhood surrounded by snippets of life with people who were either too close to her or who were complete strangers. When this chapter ended, the place returned to its original state---a quiet residence that had forged its connection with the people living outside and inside its grounds. Its unwarranted silence had since become the life that Reyes now attempts to live with: a home where everything seemed to stand still except for its inhabitants treading slowly towards the time ahead.

Regina Reyes (b. 1993, Manila PH) merges painting, sculpture, and collage in her practice. Her works are informed by personal narratives that are then projected into universal contexts.

Reyes works around the idea of home, decay, and relational experiences as constantly changing constructs. She received her BFA (Painting) from the University of the Philippines, Diliman and has been exhibiting extensively since 2013.
