From painting to installation, Crumpled To Retain Shape presents different explorations on biomorphic forms

ALEE GARIBAY

Alee Garibay's "Cycle", from our ongoing exhibition "Crumpled to Retain Shape". Garibay (b.1989) is a painter, organizer, and writer. She has received prizes for her works in oil and watercolor and was shortlisted for the 2021 Ateneo Art Awards - Purita Kalaw Ledesma Prizes for Art Criticism. Her works deal with memory, time, and human relations characterized by the moody portrayal of people and scenes rendered in cinematic pathos. Her works are filled with expressive brushstrokes contrasted with delicate layers and script-like abstraction, which are recurring motifs in her oeuvre. Garibay currently runs the Linangan Art Residency in Alfonso, Cavite, a program that cultivates vital links between art and culture and fosters the development of art production rooted in the community.

BABYLYN FAJILAGUTAN

Babylyn Fajilagutan uses found paper accumulated for years. She then intervenes with the material by tearing and cutting them into shapes and sewing through them using thread to present narratives. She received her BFA in Painting from University of the Philippines, Diliman in 2019.

ISAAC SION

Isaac Sion explores portraiture, abstraction, and street art in his practice. He received his BFA from the University of the Philippines, Diliman.

LUI GONZALES

Born in 1993, Lui Gonzales combines portraiture with everyday life in the Philippines. Drawing on layers of tracing paper, she portrays her observation of the world through a blanket of images that are then torn apart and re-arranged. She trained at the prestigious Philippine High School for the Arts and received her BFA in Painting from the University of the Philippines, Diliman.

She was one of the delegates who represented the Philippines for the 2010 ASEAN Youth Camp for Visual Arts in Hanoi, Vietnam. Her works had been presented in exhibitions here and abroad, particularly in Singapore and Indonesia. In 2020, she was the finalist of the Ateneo Art Gallery's Marciano Galang Acquisition Prize.

RAYMOND CARLOS

Raymond Carlos was born and raised Marikina, a city known for its shoe and leather industry. His familiarity with leather is visible in his body of works. He received his BFA in Painting from the University of the Philippines, Diliman and had been featured in several exhibitions, including a two-man exhibition at Kaida Contemporary. Carlos explores different formats in his art-making such as installation, painting, and leather stitching.

ZEKE CANCIO

Zeke Cancio (b. 1995) uses natural imageries and geological formations as reference in his works. He continously experiments with different media in painting, sculpture, and installation. His practice is informed by abstract expressionism and conceptual art. Cancio received his BFA in Painting from the University of the Philippines, Diliman (cum laude).
