RAMON AFABLE / REGINA REYES:
WHALEFALL
“Whale Fall” features a collaborative work by multimedia artists Ramon Afable and Regina Reyes. Navigating through themes that relate to apocalyptic and chaotic events, the artists reflect on the cycle of life. Here, destruction and damage are markers imprinted on each cycle. Reyes notes, “The world is moving at an extremely fast pace and there is no control. The world has lost its sense of unity in terms of protecting the environment and proper economic trades.” The exhibition draws influence from biblical events. The works testify to how the apocalypse is often introduced as a prophecy. Reyes’ interpretation of the Dead Sea in one of her works presents a decaying and destroyed body of water. Meanwhile, Afable’s video piece was drawn partly from two important biblical references---the Passover and the Angel of Death.
Ramon Afable (b.1993) received degrees from University of the Philippines, Diliman (BFA in Painting) and Ateneo de Manila University (BFA in Information Design). His practice extends from painting to video installation. Afable’s works provide insights into themes that explore apocalyptic visions and humanity’s psyche as conditions are set for doom.
Regina Reyes (b.1993) received her BFA in Painting from the University of the Philippines, Diliman. Her works are mainly about personal narratives that are then projected into universal contexts. Reyes has been exhibiting extensively since 2013.
